Creating buzz on a shoestring budget
Witec Alberta invited me to speak at one of their regular networking breakfasts this past week, alongside Lee McArthur, Product Manager at Kryos. Lee briefed the room on BlackBerry application platforms, choices and rollout. One of those choices for rapid application development and deployment is Kryos Velocity.
I concentrated my remarks on how resource-starved tech startups can create buzz and dialog by mixing traditional PR, marketing and advertising with social media techniques. Here are my slides from that presentation.

James Fell, Executive Director
In the Q&A I was unable to answer a request for small company social media success stories or case studies – all the ones in my head are from large organizations. So I promised to try to dig some up and link to them. Here are a few:
- 5 Small Businesses Successfully Using Social Media – Mashable.com
- 5 Easy Social Media Wins for Your Small Business – Mashable.com
- Hubspot Internet Marketing Case Studies – Hubspot.com
- Social Media for Small Business – Dell’s fan page on Facebook.com
I’m not too satisfied with the above list. If you have more or better case studies or examples of small business success (or failure) using social media, please do share in the comments below.
Many thanks to James Fell, Executive Director of Witec Alberta for the opportunity to speak to this vibrant group!

I know many non-profits that are having difficulties accepting the usefulness of SM (it scares them quite frankly)and justifying the Human Resource commitment (pulling people from other tasks to do SM). In your upcoming IABC presentation, or on this blog, can you address selling it to the boss who falls into this category? Or maybe you already have a post on this.

Good point Sandra, I may have seen something along those lines recently, let me dig a little and reply here.
